MUH 4016: History of Jazz
In this class, I learned about how and where Jazz started and the situations that lead to its creation. I learned about the different styles of music it came from and the various instruments used in different styles of Jazz. I also learned about key people from each type of jazz.
As a person who has studied music for over 7 years and a lover of music in general, this class opened my eyes to see more connections between different styles of music. It has also helped me to understand and learn more about history in a fun way. In short, it has made me a better global citizen.
FRE 3440: Commercial French 1
In this class, I learned about the business world but in French. We looked at areas like shipping and packaging goods, and writing various types of correspondence in French. We also studied a specific company throughout the semester and presented our findings in groups. I was also able to take an exam that certified me in Business French.
LING 4930: World Englishes (Section 1E60)
In this class, we looked at Inner, Outer and Expanding Circles of English and how English was brought to and is used in these different circles. We also did research on a specific aspect of an Outer or Expanding Circle English and presented our findings in class.
Before this class I had never really considered the various forms of English used around the world. To me, there was British English and American English and all users of English used an English that either favored one main English or the other, or in some cases, was a combination of both. This class has given me a broader understanding of what it means to speak English. It has taught me that other Englishes aren’t invalid simply because it isn’t exactly like British or American English. This class has also taught me the dangers a language like English could have on smaller, less common languages.
